THINGS CAN BE BEAUTIFUL: The Photography of Joe Fiasco, from 1986 to 2026

Image
OPEN 1000-1500 Friday - Sunday  Born and raised in Coventry, Joe Fiasco has spent decades documenting the City that continues to inspire his work. A familiar presence in its landscape, he has quietly recorded Coventry's evolution; its changing faces, its institutions and its streets, its pride, and its losses. From the City's football club, to its musical and cultural icons, and its everyday street corner scenes, these photographs capture a landscape in constant motion. In a life full of endings and beginnings; tragedy and humour; joy and despair, everything can be suspended within a single frame, and sometimes, briefly, things can be beautiful. "If you get through life as easily as you get into gigs... You'll be laughing!" - Dave Wakeling of The Beat and General Public, on Joe Fiasco, 1984

Scaling the Tower, a medieval romance reimagined

Image
I felt free up in my penthouse. Then you began your conquering drive.  You called it a chicken coup, a birdhouse.  My senses were all on overdrive. I was half-asleep, off-guard,  but you with your trickery had a scheme  to invade, starting from the courtyard.  You and your charms made a formidable team. You had tracked me down,  using terrestial - and celestial means.  Do I stay or leave town?  My home was no longer my castle. Smoke and burglar alarms hadn't worked.  My security was betrayed.  You advanced like a conquering horde.  Was this real, or was I being played? The lift was out of order;  no sign of the maintenance crew.  How had you climbed my tower?  Like a peregrine falcon, you flew? On the balconies you got a foothold.  Super Woman! Spider Woman!  You scaled the walls of my stronghold,  the crowds below cheered you on. I looked out from my belvedere.  You must have used a side entrance....
